About

Formed in late 2013, the Urban Dance & Educational Foundation (UDEF) is a not-for-profit corporation and public charity under Section 501(c)3 of the United States Internal Revenue Code.

UDEF’s primary purpose is to help competitive breakers and the breaking community establish economic business opportunities and jobs through the athletic dance of breaking, whether that be as competitors, event organizers, teachers/coaches or service provider to competitive breaking events.

UDEF’s goal with the competitions and other events UDEF sanctions is to help the breaking community develop a sustainable business ecosystem revolving around breaking, creating income-producing opportunities for competitors, coaches, event organizers, and service providers, while engaging fans and offering value to sponsors.

UDEF has a volunteer board comprised of professional breakers, event organizers and others from the breaking community, as well as executives from the business world.

Roles

UDEF serves as a membership organization for competitors in breaking and as a sanctioning body for breaking events. UDEF sets event competition standards, judging criteria, and other criteria to ensure uniform standards for events, whether large or small.

UDEF also supports charitable events and workshops in community centers, schools, colleges, and similar venues annually, with breakers performing, teaching and working with young people.

Since its inception, UDEF worked with thousands of competitive breakers and scores of event organizers, as well as the many service providers who assist with the events UDEF sanctions, encouraging the community to unify, coordinate and cooperate to produce professional events in order to attract a general audience following, media attention and sponsorship support for breaking.

Competitions

UDEF has sanctioned 200 competitive breaking events since its formation in late 2013, and today UDEF’s registered competitor membership base includes thousands of competitors from over 100 nations.

The Pro Breaking Tour (the Tour) has been a major initiative for UDEF. Among the leading competitions on the Tour are the Silverback Open and Freestyle Session, two of the world’s premier breaking competitions, featuring the top professional breakers from around the globe. The Tour is wholly-owned by UDEF and is operated through a taxable subsidiary.

Beginning in 2019, UDEF will expand its involvement in competitive breaking to support events outside of the Pro Breaking Tour.

UDEF membership as a Competitor is free. You must be registered as a Competitor to be eligible to compete in UDEF-sanctioned events.
